JR Vigor 60 Belt Drive
NOW BELOW $750!
We really like the Vigor 60. For the money it's a LOT of helicopter.
The one we have now is the current version with standard (non-CCPM)
mixing and belt drive tail rotor system. We like both. Sure it's
more trendy to have CCPM, but this mixing unit, slightly refined
from the Ergo 60 series, is tried and proven and it works great.
Same for the belt drive.
While tube drives are no doubt more accurate, the belt drive
is not without its own advantages. For one thing they are nowhere
near as critical or fussy to set up. For another, it is RARE
to damage the belt in a crash. Unless the boom actually breaks
and cuts the belt, you probably won't have to replace it.
Compared to the Ergo, there are a lot of improvements in the
Vigor design. The most expensive upgrade is in the swashplate
- the Vigor comes with the JR#60203, their top of the line ($200!)
all metal swashplate that's as smooth as silk. The standard Ergo
($35) swash feels pretty ugly in comparison.
A major frame redesign on the Vigor lowers the parts count
and builds the stiffest frame I've ever held. (Both are good!)
Although it appears to come with the same bearings as the Ergos
(which are not top of the line but are usable) the Vigor has
a MAJOR improvement in the way the primary drive system uses
them. The spacing on the main mast bearings is MUCH further apart
than on the Ergos, which should improve both performance and
bearing life.
As the photos at the right show, the frame set has a few more
important changes - like a third bearing in the clutch/start
shaft system. It also uses a very innovative method for aligning
the pinion/main gears via bearing blocks that are BOLTED TOGETHER!
So when you need to drop the engine (which is a snap with this
frame design!) you do NOT need to worry about re-aligning the
gears. Just align the clutch to the bell and tighten the bolts.
VERY nice. VERY smart.
The Tank center is still half a foot from the mast, making
trim shift a given. No big deal. The canopy is plastic - but
you get TWO sets of decals. There are no blades in the kit. We
suggest the NHP 700's which are designed with the Vigor in mind.
Also, follow the instructions that relate to grounding the system,
including installing the brass RF plate.
The Main Grips now have the balls in the center of the control
system, where they probably shold be on the Ergos. There
are other minor changes in the system compared to the Ergo, but
in general the control system will be familiar to Ergo fans.
PERFORMANCE? YOU BET! In the biggest MONEY event on
the planet, the 1999 IAM Meet in Japan, Curtis flew his Vigor
to first place - beating plenty of Milleniums, an Imperio and
everything else. You can buy the video. Obviously Curtis's skill
had something to do with the win, but the performance is right
there on tape for you to watch.
Overall, we think the Vigor has an EXCELLENT combination of
building ease, innovative design, and excellent flying abilities.
The dollar to value ratio is very high on this heli.

Above - the completely assembled Vigor head, seesaw and mixer
arms, high grade swash, clutch bell (with cooling holes!) and
some of the bearing blocks, stock, as you get them. Very nice
stuff!
