The current offering from ThunderTiger, The Raptor 30 V2 (for Version 2) is an evolution of the most popular trainer ever sold, the Raptor 30. All of the control systems remain functionally the same, and the general layout of the frames, belt driven tail and so on are retained.
Most obvious difference from the V1 series is the canopy. The new one looks MUCH better as you can see below. We're not nuts about the decals but that's subjective and minor and you can always order or make your own decals or trim scheme.
The Frames are new, very much more rugged and include a much better cooling shroud and a taller-shorter large fuel tank. Layout is about the same as the original. The boom supports are MUCH better, with molded end fittings. The frames are still open at the bottom for easy engine removal after you remove the muffler. The clutch and bell are new and the clutch is a better design with elongated relief holes and a copy of our clutch shim. There are VERY few issues with clutches on the V2 series Raptors.
The start shaft is bigger diameter, very beefy. This means that the clutch, pinion, bearings, and hex receiver are all imcompatible with the V1 and 50. The start shaft system includes one more bearing now, and retains the one-way bearing in the clutch so you can use an inexpensive 6mm start shaft extension. Again, a MUCH improved and very trouble-free system.
Also new and bigger is the feathering spindle. That's why the parts are different for not only the spindle but also the blade grips, blade bearings, thrust bearings, head dampners and head block. THIS IS A HUGELY IMPROVED HEAD - the first time we flew it we couldn't believe it was a Raptor!
The swashplate is now a swaged metal upper race design that looks and works fine but has a molded lower ring. They are pretty tough and generally trouble free.
The Raptor 30 flies VERY nicely. The controls are good, with fairly strong cyclics and a full 20 degrees plus of usefull collective range. It flies like a Raptor, which is a compliment. the V2 Specs have virtually eliminated all of the woof-n-poof or wah-wah issues so prevalent on the V1 series.
So far we haven't bothered to stock the "PRO" version of the kits since the "SPORT" version needs only a $18 bearing upgrade set to be the same as the PRO for less money. The ARFs are the "Pro" (full 49 bearing) version. We try to stock the Pro ARF with engine, The Sport Kit, and the Sport Kit with engine and muffler.
It's common nowadays for people to recommend the Raptor 50 for a first time buyer, and that's certainly a valid option. However, the Raptor 30 is packaged to sell at a much lower price and of course the engine and servos required will also cost less. So if your budget is strained by the full package cost of the Raptor 50, the 30 V2 is a great way to go. It can easily be upgraded to the Raptor 50 later on, when you are ready for the higher performance.
Or, you may never feel the need to upgrade to a 50. The OS37 is a great running engine that will give good general aerobatic performance, or the OS 32 will give great trainer/sport performance at a lower cost. Either way, HeliProz has packages at great prices and of course the best stock of OEM parts and upgrades AND Mavrikk Brand parts and upgrades at SUPER prices!
Note that ALL Raptor Kits, Combos, Parts and Upgrades are priced as posted on our online catalog. FREE UPS GROUND SHIPPING on all orders over $100 in the 48 states.
