- What else do I need to get started?
- Here's a general list to guide you.
-
- MAJOR ITEMS...
1. Helicopter! (duh!) If it's a kit you will also need some tools,
threadlock and so on.
2. Engine. Don't use an airplane engine, get a real live helicopter
engine. Also Glow plugs. They don't come with the engine either.
We recommend the OS#8 or the Enya #3, and get some extras.
3. Muffler. Heli engines do NOT include mufflers. Make certain
to order the proper muffler to fit your engine AND your helicopter
- there are many different designs and they do NOT all work on
all helis.
4. Radio. You need at least a 6-channel radio with five servos.
We strongly suggest at least ball bearing equipped servos, not
the standard $10 servo that start out sloppy and quickly get
worse. Remember, a heli radio can fly an airplane just fine but
it's dang near impossible to fly a heli with an airplane radio.
(All current 6-ch and up computer radios can do either fixed
wing or helis).
5. Gyro. You need a gyro to tame the yaw axis of your heli. Trust
me on this.
6. Metric Tools. All helis use metric fasteners. You'll need
a set of hex drivers and a few nut drivers. You also need a 5/16th
glow plug wrench.
7. Electric Starter and Extension. You can't hand-start a glow
heli since there's a clutch in the system. The starter will come
with a cone for airplanes - in most cases you need to get either
an extension or a hex-start shaft to attach to the starter.
8. Glow Lighter. Either a simple cabled device for your power
panel, or a self contained rechargeable glow lighter.
9. Fuel Pump. Hand operated or electric - to get fuel into and
out of your heli.
10. Flight Box. Sort of optional, but you have to get all of
the stuff to the flying site somehow. The cardboard box routine
will get old quickly. If you are in the sport very long you will
end up with a good flight box and power panel (see next item...)
11. Power Panel. This is a simple "power splitter"
that allows you to use a single 12v battery to power your electric
starter, fuel pump, and glow plug lighter. (And field charger
if you get one). Probably the best way to go, but not absolutely
required. If you DO go this way, you'll need...
12. 12v Gel Cell and charger. Get one with at least 7 amps. This
powers all the devices you attach to the power panel. Almost
all power panels allow you to charge the battery by hooking the
charger up to the 12v electric starter connectors.
13. Pitch Gauge. Absolute must in our opinion. Used to set the
collective pitch curves.
14. Ball Link Pliers. Yes, you need them.
15. Radio Case. Okay, it's optional - but your radio is one of
the most expensive items you're buying, and it just kills us
to see the trasnmitters covered with dirt and fuel.
16. Fast Charger for your Radio. Again, optional - but this way
you can fly all day.
17. Fuel. We recommend at least 15% Nitro, preferably 30%, and
ONLY heli fuel. We prefer all-synthetic oil due to better performance
and cooling. Heli Fuel has more oil in it than airplane fuels.
