On all of the helis with forward facing engines, the
glow plug is inaccessible unless you remove the canopy. This
is also true of most scale helis, and in fact many rear-facing
engine designs don't have that clear of a path to the glow plug.
The solution to the above annoying problems is both simple
and inexpensive. Put a remote glow plug adapter on your heli,
allowing you to attach your glow plug lighter to an easy to reach
"dummy" glow plug, which is in turn connected to the
real glow plug.
We stock two such devices, both selling for well under $10.
On the left above is the Sullivan Remote Headlock. (Formerly
sold by Model Products Corp). The Sullivan unit uses two wires,
one of which connects to the engine either via an engine mounting
bolt or by connecting to a metal (not plastic!) frame part that
connects to the (metal) engine block. The other wire has a "twist
to lock" spring loaded glow plug connector. The Sullivan
unit has longer wires on it, allowing you to place the "dummy"
plug almost anywhere you wish. It also has a 90-degree mounting
plate for the dummy plug. Eventually the spring loaded connector
will wear out, at which time an alligator clip makes a fine replacement.
Also, the mounting bracket is prone to fatigue from use and vibration.
The unit on the right is Ace's Remote Glow Adapter (part
#3803). It uses a single wire, which is a higher quality
wire than the Sullivan. You still need a "+" and "-"
to your plug, and the Ace device accomplishes this by mounting
the unit directly to the engine or to the engine mount. (On metal
frame helis ONLY - not the Raptor - you could also mount it on
the frame). The wire is short, so you have fewer choices as to
where to mount the unit. The glow plug end has a simple "bent
wire" type clip, which is pretty foolproof.
